In this tutorial, I will explain to you how to install Windows 10 on your PC for free.

The free upgrade offered by Windows 10 has expired since July 29, 2016. Before that date, Windows 7 and 8.1 users had the option to upgrade their PC to the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system and this, for free.

Indeed, it is still possible to install Windows 10 for free in several different ways:

• through media creation tool.
• Using Windows 10 ISO.
• Using the upgrade utility.
• By simply using a Windows 7 or 8.1 product key.

Your PC will have a Windows 10 digital license.

This digital license will be associated with your PC, which means that you can at any time and without problem format your disk and reinstall Windows 10, your PC will always have its digital license. You don’t need a product key, Windows 10 activation is automatic.

Get Windows 10 for free

Method 1: with the Windows 10 media creation tool or ISO

Choose between two method to start the installation of Windows 10 :

First method :

Download the Windows 10 media creation tool and launch it. On the first screen, select Upgrade this PC now.

Second method :

• Download Windows 10 ISO,
• Double-click the ISO image file, the ISO image is now mounted on a virtual CD/DVD drive.
• Open the drive that was created in File Explorer, and double-click the setup.exe file.
  
• Check Download and install updates box and click Next.
  
• Accept the terms of the license agreement.

The next screen summarizes the edition of Windows 10 that will be installed and what you want to keep.

By default, all your settings, personal files and applications are preserved. Click Install to start installing Windows 10.

Congratulations ! You installed Windows 10 for free on your PC. You get a Windows 10 digital license valid for life.

Method 2: with the upgrade utility

As I said in the introduction, the free upgrade offer to Windows 10 expired on July 29, 2016. In contrast, Microsoft allowed users who use assistive technology to still be able to take advantage of the free upgrade offer through an upgrade utility.

Except that no check is made by this utility to know if you are actually using assistive technology! Whether you use it or not, the update to Windows 10 works, and you get a digital license for Windows 10 for free.

This offer for users who use assistive technology has expired in December 31, 2017. However, it is still possible today to use the upgrade utility to upgrade Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 !

Click the following link to download the Windows 10 upgrade utility.

Launch the downloaded executable to start the upgrade to Windows 10 and click the Accept button.

The utility checks if you have the minimum system requirements to install Windows 10. Click the Next button to start downloading the Windows 10 installation files.

Windows 10 download starts.

Once the installation is complete, all you have to do is configure Windows 10.

You have just installed Windows 10 for free on your PC. You get a Windows 10 digital license valid for life.

Method 3: Using a Windows 7 or 8.1 product key

From version 1011 of Windows 10, it is possible to activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 or 8.1 product key. It was a solution that made it easier to activate Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer valid until July 29, 2016.

Guess what ! this solution still works!

Here’s how:

Once Windows 10 is installed, open Windows 10 Settings> Update & Security> Activation. You may have this error message:

Windows 10 is not activated. We cannot activate Windows on this device because you do not have a valid product key or digital license. Go to the Windows Store to purchase an authentic version of Windows. Error code: 0x803F7001.

Click the Change Product Key button and enter your Windows 7 or 8.1 product key.

You have just installed Windows 10 for free on your PC. You get a Windows 10 digital license valid for life.
